Gyroscopic Golf Club Gives you the Perfect Swing? - Switched

Gyroscopic Golf Club Gives you the Perfect Swing? - Switched: "Here's a gift for the geek and golfer on your holiday shopping list, the Gyro Swing, a golf club with a gyroscope in the head. A perfect gift, that is, as long as you don't mind dropping $200 and are comfortable with purchasing something based on questionable scientific claims.

The gimmicky Gyro Swing claims that the gyroscopic disc inside the head, which spins 20,000 times per minute, lets you 'feel' the perfect swing and resists movement, keeping your swing straight and level."

Fairfield father accused of drunken driving after son falls out of golf cart - San Jose Mercury News: "A 51-year-old man whose son fell out of a golf cart the father was driving on Halloween night was arrested for felony driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run and felony child endangerment, Fairfield police reported Saturday.

At about 7:25 p.m. Friday, Fairfield police received calls about a man driving a golf cart erratically in the area of Timberline Drive and Silverado Drive in Cordelia.

When officers responded to the area, additional witnesses called to report that the man, Douglas Cyr, had a boy in the golf cart with him and had hit a vehicle, causing the boy to fall out of the cart.

Officers determined that Cyr was under the influence of alcohol. They also determined that he had struck two parked cars and caused his 9-year-old son to fall off of the golf cart.

Cyr fled the area and went home. Witnesses told the officers where Cyr lived and they went to the home and arrested him."

Tiger Woods ends Golf Channel 'lynch' row - Telegraph

Tiger Woods ends Golf Channel 'lynch' row - Telegraph: "Tiger Woods has sought to put an end to the 'lynch' controversy, claiming that US TV presenter Kelly Tilghman meant no harm when she used the term during an ill-judged quip about the world No 1 golfer.

Tilghman was suspended by the Golf Channel for two weeks after joking with Nick Faldo that the only way to stop Woods winning every tournament was to 'lynch him in a back alley'.

The incident also resulted in the sacking of Golfweek editor Dave Seanor after he put a noose on the cover of the magazine to highlight the issue."

AFP: Defending champ Goosen out of Qatar golf Masters

AFP: Defending champ Goosen out of Qatar golf Masters: "DOHA (AFP) — Retief Goosen's hopes of becoming the first golfer to win the European Tour's Qatar Masters on two occasions were wrecked on Wednesday when he was forced to withdraw with vision problems.

The South African came to Doha after undergoing corrective laser surgery ten days ago but during practice on Tuesday, his vision in one eye began to blur. He immediately travelled to Dubai for further treatment and was hopeful of playing the event even on Tuesdy night. However, he announced his withdrawal Wednesday morning, saying he was still having problems with his vision.

Goosen said: 'I am obviously very sad that I am unable to defend my title. I came all this way to play but unfortunately the eye is causing a problem.

'I thought it would come good but it hasn't. I went to Dubai yesterday and the advice was to go back to London for treatment.

'It is a shame as I love this event, love this course and I can't remember the last time I pulled out of a tournament.'"

AFP: Australian snake misses the birdie, swallows golf balls

AFP: Australian snake misses the birdie, swallows golf balls: "A couple discovered the one-metre (three-foot) python at their property with four bulges in its stomach and realised it had eaten golf balls placed on nests in a chicken coop to calm broody hens.

They took the ailing serpent to Currimbin Wildlife Sanctuary in Queensland state where senior veterinarian Michael Pyne safely removed the balls.

'Without surgery, it would have certainly died,' Pyne told AFP.

'The golf balls had travelled as far as they could in the snake's system and it was destined for a slow, painful death without surgery.

'You could clearly see the golf balls on the X-rays, so we knew what we were dealing with.'

Pyne said the snake, which is not considered dangerous to humans, was recovering well after the surgery late last month and would soon be released back into the wild, near the property where it was originally discovered."

Amazon.co.uk: Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect: Books: Robert J. Rotella,Bob Cullen: "
One of golf guru Jim Flick's mantras is that golf is 90 percent mental and the other 10 per cent is mental, too. Dr. Bob Rotella, a noted sports psychologist and performance consultant, roots around the golfer's mind to expose--and analyse- -the doubts, the fears and the frustrations that haunt anyone who's ever picked up a club and swung it. Through anecdote and aphorism he suggests how these mental and emotional hazards can be played through, and, regardless of skill level, how teeing off with a more positive and confident outlook will translate into better performance. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Synopsis
Dr Bob Rotella is one of the hottest golfing performance consultants in the world today. Unlike other performance consultants, Rotella goes beyond the usual mental aspects of the game and the reliance on specific techniques. In this extraordinary book, and with his clients, he creates an attitude and a mindset about all aspects of the golfer's game, from mental preparation to competition. And, as some of the world's greatest golfers will attest, the results are spectacular. Filled with charming and insightful stories about golf and the golfers Rotella works with, GOLF IS NOT A GAME OF PERFECT will improve the game of even the most casual weekend player.

Amazon.co.uk: Top 100 Golf Courses of the British Isles: Books: Keith Baxter: "A beautifully packaged account of the 100 best golf courses in the UK and Ireland. This is a well photographed and well researched book which is a perfect addition to any golfers collection of literature about the game. It is concise yet detailed, with an interesting mix of the authors considered views merged with the opinions of the many who visit the website. An ideal buy for anybody visiting the UK wishing to play the best courses and some of the hidden gems, but also a great read for those who want to enjoy a society day or as a supporting guide for a holiday. I could imagine it making a great stocking filler at xmas for any golfer. Great value."

Amazon.co.uk: Top 100 Golf Courses of the British Isles: Books: Keith Baxter: "Picked this title up at Aberdovey GC and I haven't been able to put it down since. The honest reviews from real golfers are great to read and I have to say in the most part these reviews are accurate. Some of the pictures are brilliant and others are OK but that's because most of the photos are not the work of professional golf course photographers. It could do with a map for travelling golfers showing where the courses are in relation to each other but apart from that it's a nice book and one which will appeal to golfers who like playing different courses."

Wildlife Extra - Donald Trump golf course rejected by council

Wildlife Extra - Donald Trump golf course rejected by council: "
Donald Trump golf course rejected by council
November, 2007. The Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) has applauded a landmark decision by Aberdeenshire Infrastructure Services Committee to reject Donald Trump’s outline planning application for golf course resort development at Balmedie north of Aberdeen. The proposal would have seen the destruction of a one of the most spectacular dune habitats in Scotland, a site specially designated due to its national importance.

Victory for the environment over the dollar
The rejection overrules the approval given by the Formantine Planning Committee of Aberdeenshire Council. Paul F. Gallagher, SWT’s National Planning Co-ordinator said: ‘Today’s decision is a clear victory for the environment over the dollar. The Scottish Wildlife Trust voiced concerns over the environmental impact this development would have on one of top five sand dune systems in the UK and Trump’s organisation (TIGLS) ignored all calls for this development to be moved away from this sensitive area.

Under the provisions of the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004 local authorities, such as Aberdeenshire Council, have a statutory duty to conserve biodiversity. This is the right and proper decision and just shows that the people of Aberdeenshire consider and care for their local environment. ‘

Golf | Golf | Magazine owes Woods' wife money, apology | Seattle Times Newspaper: "Golf | Magazine owes Woods' wife money, apology By The Associated Press and Reuters Related * PGA leaderboard DUBLIN, Ireland — The wife of top-ranked Tiger Woods won $183,250 and an apology Friday from an Irish magazine that published an abusive article and a faked nude photo of her. Elin Nordegren Woods received the money as part of a settlement of a libel action brought against The Dubliner magazine in November 2006. The former swimsuit model said the money would be donated to cancer-support charities in memory of Heather Clarke, the late wife of British golfer Darren Clarke. Trevor White, publisher of The Dubliner, conceded the article — published in September 2006 when Ireland was hosting the Ryder Cup — 'was cheap, tasteless, and deliberately offensive. It was also completely untrue.' The article angered Woods during the first day of competition, which the United States lost to Europe. The article's headline described the U.S. golfers' wives as 'Ryder Cup filth.'"

Golf Real Estate: for the Love of the Game

Written by EditorsChoice
Tuesday, 25 September 2007

Since 1456, when the first game was recorded in Edinburgh, golf has been creating some of world's most loyal fans and devotees. But we've come a long way from that crude beginning where players spent their time hitting a rock around on the craggy moors with a well-shaped stick. The Journal of Sports Sciences reports that there are now 30,000 golf courses and 55 million people who play golf worldwide. Over the centuries, players traded in the well-shaped sticks for drivers, irons, wedges, hybrids, and putters. We now have professionally designed courses, state-of-the-art gear, international tournaments and celebrities. For those who really love the game however, perhaps the greatest modern golf invention is the golf community: a place to call home where the whole neighborhood celebrates the game as seriously as players do.

These communities offer the best professionally-designed courses all within a three iron/driver's distance from your front lawn. Often attracting celebrities and professional golf players, the challenging courses will test even the most experienced golfers. Still, there's enough variety in the courses to keep both avid and amateur golfers entertained. Residents don't need to be semi-pro, nor do they have to dumb it down. A range of challenges will keep it interesting for everyone - so feel free to invite your favorite non-golfing friends and relatives over. They might catch the bug too and end up as your neighbors!

Golf-Weir ready to be thrown to the Tiger | Sports | Golf | Reuters:

By Steve Keating

MONTREAL, Sept 25 (Reuters) - U.S. captain Jack Nicklaus is not sure who he would like to see Tiger Woods partnered with at the Presidents Cup but he knows who he would like to see the world number one play against.

"I think it will be great if Mike Weir played Tiger," Nicklaus told reporters on Tuesday. "I think that would be a great match. I think it's the logical thing to try to do.

"But Mike might not want to play him. I have no idea if Gary (International captain Gary Player) wants to do that or not and I have no idea if Tiger wants to do that. But that's my thought."

Pairings and matchups -- particularly those involving Woods -- are treated as top secret at the Presidents Cup, the subject of endless debate and speculation ahead of the start of play on Thursday.

The slightest hint that Weir, the hometown hero and only Canadian in the field, could be the man chosen to face down the world's best player in Sunday's decisive singles triggered the first buzz of the week.
